Illustrations for the Picturebook ‘Wundersames Welterbe’ about the Unesco World Heritage Graz & Schloss Eggenberg

I love Art History and exploring old places. With my background in architecture, I'm particularly passionate about creating detailled explanatory drawings, like sections or maps.

The illustration call of the UNESCO commission was a clear choice for me. Fortunately, the jury shared my enthusiasm; my sketches convinced them, and I was tasked with illustrating the highlights of some of the most beautiful details and sights of Graz for their book. Although there are undoubtedly more, I was restricted to two double-spreads.

I drew a map of the old town, which is beautifully preserved amidst the newer parts of the city. This is also the starting point of the axis between the Castle of Eggenberg and Graz, both significant parts of the city's heritage.

The Castle of Eggenberg is particularly captivating, frozen in time amidst the vast trees of its park, where peacocks stroll. The dark blue illustration represents the bel étage, where original chandeliers still hang. Remarkably, the castle has remained unchanged since 1770, as no electric lighting was installed during its century-long abandonment and use as storage.

The intriguing aspect of the castle is its construction based on a quite consequent and complicated calendar system. For instance, it boasts 365 windows, symbolizing each day of the year.

During the drawing process, I had asked for the opportunity to spend time in the planetary room, which is typically closed during winter. It was a good experience. In my belief, sketches from nature always add authenticity to artworks and illustrations.
